asphyxiation.

noun. the state or process of being deprived of oxygen, which can result in unconsciousness or death; suffocation.

Like many other students raised by First-Generation, Asian parents, I was taught to endlessly study, as that was the key to my future. While our parents may have enforced this standard into our lives as a means of showing us their love, the methods they used were less than righteous. Many others and I drowned in the endless responsibilities and expectations placed on us, which is represented by Jennifer in the first part of this series.

In “asphyxiation,” I hope to represent the trapped feelings of many other Asian-American teens struggling to find a balance between their duties to themselves and their their cultures.
